Road weight restriction of Taiwan - Effective July 1, 2017


Dear MOL Customer,

Please be advised that the Judicial Yuen, Taiwan has made amendments to the Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act (Article 29-2) on November 16, 2016 and the act will come into force on July 1, 2017. 

The amendment is as follows: 

  • Should a vehicle driver carrying goods enters the road section within 5 kilometers (previously 1 kilometer) front of a weight station and fails to follow instructions to enter the scales as provided by relevant road traffic signs, markings, or signals, or given instructions by traffic police officers or personnel conducting traffic inspections pursuant to laws and regulations, the driver shall be fined NT$90,000 (previously NT$10,000) and forced to enter the scales.

According to the Article 29-2, in the case of loads exceeding the weight limit by no more than 10 tons, a fine of NT$1,000 shall be charged for each ton that exceeds the limit; in the case of loads exceeding the weight limit by 10 to 20 tons, a fine of NT$2,000 shall be charged for each ton that exceeds the limit; in the case of loads exceeding the weight limit by 20 to 30 tons, a fine of NT$3,000 shall be charged for each ton that exceeds the limit; and in the case of loads exceeding the weight limit by over 30 tons, a fine of NT$5,000 shall be charged for each ton that exceeds the limit. Fractions of 1 ton shall be rounded up to 1 ton.

While MOL recognizes that the maximum gross weight (cargo, container unit, chassis and tractor) required by the Ministry of Transport and Communication Taiwan is 42,000 kilograms, we request all customers to keep your cargo within MOL’s weight limit of 30,000 kilograms (tare weight plus cargo weight).
