Harmonized System Commodity Code(s) (HS Code(s))

Dear MOL Customer,

Please be advised that, effective October 12, 2015, MOL Liner will request all customers to provide the six-digit Harmonized System Commodity Code(s) (HS Code(s)) when submitting Shipping Instructions (SI). The request is applicable regardless of the origin and/or destination of the shipment.

Please note that including HS Code(s) in the S/I Goods Description field will result in the information appearing in B/L and Carrier’s Manifest. If you do not want the HS Code(s) to appear in the B/L and Carrier’s Manifest, please avoid providing the HS Code(s) in the Goods Description. Instead, please include the HS Code(s) in an independent field in your S/I or in your email message. We recommend our e-S/I function where this independent field exists. The HS Code(s) is an internationally standardized system of names and numbers for classifying traded products developed and maintained by the World Customs Organization (WCO). For your convenience, the HS Code(s) list is posted on our website

While MOL recognizes that many countries do not require HS Code(s) to be reported in the ocean carrier’s manifest, MOL intends to collect this information to enhance the company’s knowledge of the specific commodities it transports. The HS Code(s) is a valuable supplement to general cargo descriptions. The provision of the HS Code(s) together with accurate commodity descriptions will make our documentation process more efficient and help us to deliver a better customer experience. For example, it may help MOL to improve the accuracy of B/L rating/invoicing and to deliver products and services that are best suited for the commodities we transport.

Thank you for your cooperation. If you have any questions, please contact your local MOL sales representative. As always, we appreciate your business.

Yours sincerely,

MOL Liner Ltd.
